Another day, another awards show cementing frontrunners, as the American Film Institute has released their 2017 list of the best films and television shows of the year. And while there aren’t many surprises on this list, it’s still a testament to what a great year its been for pop culture.
Just how predictable was this year’s list of films? I managed to predict nine of the top ten contenders in my personal predictions, and I would have had ten if I’d known Call Me By Your Name qualified as an American film (I instead predicted Mudbound). The other nine are the big contenders for Best Picture at the moment: The Big Sick, Dunkirk, The Florida Project, Get Out, Lady Bird, The Post, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and, most fun of all, Wonder Woman. That’s a pretty solid list, making up the greatest and most influential films of the past year. I personally wouldn’t have included Three Billboards, and The Florida Project would be on the fence for me, but overall I don’t have any complaints.
As for television, I only predicted five out of the ten finalists, with Big Little Lies, Feud: Bette and Joan, Game of Thrones, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Master of None all making the list. The five I didn’t predict include The Crown, The Good Place, Insecure, Stranger Things 2, and This Is Us. That’s a pretty solid list of ten shows, and I feel like it could expand even wider (BoJack Horseman, American Vandal, Twin Peaks, The Deuce, Veep, and Fargo all come to mind). However, I have no qualms here, and you should really watch all ten if you get the chance. Oh, and The Vietnam War has followed in O.J.: Made In America’s footsteps and received a Special Award Ken Burns’ accomplishment as a documentarian and television journalist.
