Having finally worked their way through their entire male catalogue, Marvel has finally realized that “Hey, maybe we should give women a chance to have their own movies.” So even though she (SPOILER ALERT) tragically sacrifices herself halfway through Avengers: Endgame, the studio has finally gotten around to giving Scarlett Johansson her own film for her iconic Black Widow. And I’ve gotta say – as much as I wasn’t interested in a spinoff for this particular character (Johansson’s portrayal has always been a rough spot for me), this trailer really makes Widow look like the next exciting entry in the MCU.
After the events of Captain America: Civil War, Natasha Romanoff (Johansson) is left alone and on the run. When a new threat emerges and forces her to confront her past, Romanoff is forced to team up with some former allies, including Russia’s answer to Captain America Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour), her older mentor Melina (Rachel Weisz), and her sister-figure Yelena Belova, the new Black Widow (Florence Pugh).
I’m consistently up and down on the Marvel films (this past year saw me tolerating Captain Marvel and Spider-Man while surprisingly loving Endgame), but something about this trailer really worked for me. I’m not sure what specifically I love about it – maybe it’s the Bourne-style action sequences, including an excellent fight between Johansson and Pugh; maybe it’s the general aesthetic; or maybe it’s the humor in the relationships between the four protagonists. No matter what it is, I’ll definitely be willing to show up and check this one out, even if I secretly wish the MCU ended after Endgame. Black Widow will be released on May 1st, 2020, and you can watch the full trailer below.
