Pretty much from today until December, the trailers that will be coming out are going to be major Oscar contenders. This is incredibly true about Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi drama Arrival, which will have its premieres at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it at Telluride in the coming weeks.
Based on the novel Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang, the film follows the aftermath of the arrival of mysterious spacecrafts. Language expert Louise Banks (Amy Adams) and mathematician Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) must find a way to make contact with the aliens and discover their purpose, while humanity sits on the brink of global war, waiting for answers.
Villeneuve is on a hot streak right now. His film Prisoners is one of the best of 2013, and I just watched his most recent film Sicario last night, and it is really something. Arrival should prove to be a major contender going into awards season, and who knows? Maybe Adams will get nomination #6. The film also stars Forest Whitaker, and will be arriving (I’m so sorry) November 11.
