BOW DOWN, B*TCHES! The period political drama is back in full force with the first trailer for Mary Queen of Scots, and while I have some thoughts about the trailer as a whole, there is no denying that Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie are truly gunning for their Oscars.
The film follows the mid-sixteenth century feud between Mary Stuart, the Queen of Scotland (Ronan) and her cousin Elizabeth, the Queen of England (Robbie). Despite their familial relationship, they were torn apart by religion, the men in their courts, and their lust for power. Eventually, their journeys would lead to betrayal, rebellion, and ultimately, death.
I’m very mixed on this trailer. On the one hand, it is a very boring, very straightforward trailer, with little excitement outside of a few key areas. On the other hand, those key areas are TWO OF OUR GREATEST ACTRESSES IN FLAMBOYANT ELIZIBETHAN GARB SHOUTING MONOLOGUES AT EACH OTHER! That aspect alone is enough to sell me on this film, even if it’s a bore in every other regard. And even if the film isn’t a Best Picture contender like a predicted, it should likely earn nominations for Best Makeup, Best Costumes, and undeniably Best Actress and Supporting Actress for the two leads. Hell, I’d go as far as to call these two the frontrunenrs. We’ll know for sure when the film is unsurprisingly announced as a TIFF contender and eventually is released on December 7th.
