It appears that the marketing team of Star Trek: Beyond heard your complaints, because there are no laughs (no intentional laughs, cough cough “Hold on to something”) to be found in the newest trailer for the upcoming film, due to be released July 22, 2016.
Directed by Justin Lin, the film is “the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin (“The Fast and the Furious” franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. In ‘Beyond,’ the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.”
I don’t know about you, but I could not care less about this movie. I really liked the first one, but Star Trek: Into Darkness was a heinous nightmare. And I like this cast and especially Benedict Cumberbatch. Without J.J. Abrams at the helm, I just can’t imagine this movie will be very good. However, it may be worth it to check out for some good summer escapism and especially to see the late Anton Yelchin, who passed away a week ago. Anyway, here’s the trailer, which does away with the Beastie Boys for an original song by Rihanna titled “Sledgehammer.”
