One of the biggest literary hits of last year was Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give. A timely, electrifying YA novel, the book made several 2017 Best-Of lists and topped the bestselling charts upon its release. And unsurprisingly, we now have a trailer for the fast-tracked film, which will be coming to theaters this October.
Starr Carter (Amanda Stenberg) lives in two worlds. While she was born into a poor, mostly black neighborhood, she attends a mostly-white prep school in a different part of town. She balances these lives with two entirely different groups of friends, including Chris (KJ Apa) and Hailey (Sabrina Carpenter) at school and her childhood best friend Khalil (Algee Smith) at home. However, things change when she is the sole witness of the shooting of her Khalil by a police officer. The story becomes a media sensation, with reporters, her classmates, her community, and her family – including an uncle who is friends with the officer in question – all taking sides, and Starr is left to decide whether to testify or not at the upcoming trial.
I never finished reading The Hate U Give. I started reading it around the same time as The Plot Against America and got more immersed in the latter. However, this trailer makes me want to finish the book as soon as possible. This is an excellent trailer, reminding me of the great YA adaptations that came before, from The Perks of Being a Wallflower to To Kill A Mockingbird. This is an exciting film, and I will be reading and seeing this as soon as I get the chance. The Hate U Give will be released October 19th, and you can watch the trailer below.
