I don’t think anything can stop Darren Aronofsky. While I appreciated his 2014 film Noah, most critics panned it, and it flopped at the box office. However, he didn’t let that stop him the way most directors would; instead, he has doubled down with a psychological horror straight out of the 70s, and if it is anything like this trailer, the world of film will be all the better for it.
Aronofsky’s mother! follows a young woman (Jennifer Lawrence) and her husband (Javier Bardem) who watch their idyllic life fall apart as a mysterious couple (Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer) arrive to stay with them.
This is an excellent trailer. It captures the smart directing and horrific feeling that made films like Rosemary’s Baby, The Shining, and Misery such great films. Aronofsky is one of the most exciting directors in the business, and I can’t wait to see what he comes up with. The film also stars Kristen Wiig, Domhnall Gleeson, and Brian Gleeson, and is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival. It will be released September 15th, and you can watch the trailer below.
