I’ve fallen a little behind on trailers in recent days, so I’m going to spend some time trying to get caught back up. I’ll start with what may be the sleeper film of the Oscar race, Arrival. We saw a teaser trailer for the film about two weeks ago, and now we have a full length trailer AS WELL as an international trailer.
Based on the novel Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang, the film follows the aftermath of the arrival of mysterious spacecrafts. Language expert Louise Banks (Amy Adams) and mathematician Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) must find a way to make contact with the aliens and discover their purpose, while humanity sits on the brink of global war, waiting for answers.
This film looks better and better with each glimpse we get. Adams hasn’t made a great film in about three years, but she’s still one of the best actresses out there, and she’s been gunning for her Oscar since 2005. Meanwhile, Denis Villeneuve is one of the better directors in Hollywood right now, and I’m excited to see what he does with the science fiction genre. The film will be released November 11, and will have its premiere at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, which I will be writing more about soon.
