Watch The Official ‘Moana’ Olympics Trailer

Strangely, I find myself excited for the newest Disney films more so as an adult than I ever did as a child. Maybe because I’ve always been a little contrarian sh*t, maybe because by the time I started enjoying cinema, Disney’s lineup included Home on the Range and Bolt, two all-time lows for the company. At any rate, the company is currently experiencing an animated revival, starting back in 2009 with The Princess and the Frog, hitting its pinnacle in 2013 with Frozen, and continuing this year with the remarkable Zootopia. And this won’t be the only time we see a Disney Animated Film this year. For the first time since 2002, we will be getting two new Disney movies. And this one has The Rock.

The film will follow young Moana (newcomer Auli’I Cravalho), the daughter of a chief in the South Pacific, who wishes to sail and navigate the world the way her ancestors did. When danger rears its head in the form of a Lava Witch, Moana must team up with the legendary demigod Maui (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) to complete her quest.

The big selling point for this movie, other than The Rock and gorgeous animation, are the original songs written by Lin Manuel-Miranda of Hamilton fame. He’s making a move for his PEGOT, you guys. The cast has recently been rounded out by Temuera Morrison (Star Wars Episodes II and III), Nicole Scherzinger (The Pussycat Dolls), Rachel House (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, written by this film’s screenwriter Taika Waititi), Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords, The BFG), Alan Tudyk (Firefly, most modern Disney movies) and Phillipa Soo (Hamilton).

The most recent trailer dropped last night during the Olympics, and if you are like me, you’ll be excited to see this film when it comes out November 23.

High hopes for this one. Like the moving tattoos and the song. Sounds a little bit like Lilo and Stitch, which I guess makes sense…

Maui is a mythological figure to everyone in the south pacific just like hercules is. He has a rich story that intertwines with the creation myth and the genesis of New Zealand. Ask any 5 year old in new zealand, or the pacific islands and they tell you he fished up new zealand, tamed the sun, bought fire to the world, and has a magical jawbone 🙂
