Announcement: CinemaCon 2017 Daily Updates

Later today, CinemaCon will kick off in Las Vegas. I’m sure many of you haven’t heard about this event, and that’s ok. You originally weren’t supposed to. When CinemaCon started out, it was just a gathering of theatre chains to discuss camera technology and for studios to make deals. However, that all changed in 2012, when studios began testing marketing and release schedules in front of theatres, producers, and critics, ending up determining marketing patterns, release dates, and even awards schedules. Films like Les Misérables and Life of Pi helped solidify their Oscar and box office success at the studio, and the trend didn’t stop there. Inside Out, La La Land, Finding Dory, Interstellar, Furious 7, and Jurassic World all began their successful runs at the convention, while films like Passengers, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty watched their dreams of critical and commercial success go up in flames.

In my opinion, CinemaCon is the most important event for deciding your yearlong viewing schedule. It will show you what the funniest comedies, heart-stopping actions, and saddest dramas will be in the coming months. Therefore, I have decided I will provide you all with coverage throughout the week. Each morning following the presentations, I will give you an update of the previous day’s screenings, building up to a “Best Of” article this Friday. Hopefully, we will come out of this week with an idea of which studios are ready, which need to tinker with the schedule, and which you should avoid for the rest of the year. So prepare for a frequently fun, informative week, and get ready for a great 2017, everyone!
