Well guys, it’s finally happening. After nearly eighteen films in ten years, everything Marvel has been building towards with their Cinematic Universe will finally be unveiled. And we finally have our first footage of it, as the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War has finally been released.
As the intergalactic despot Thanos (Josh Brolin) sets his sights on the Infinity Stones, five gems that will allow him to inflict his will on all reality, it is up to the broken Avengers team to bring together their entire lineup, including the space bandits known as the Guardians of the Galaxy, to finally put an end to the threat first raised ten years ago with the Battle of New York.
Even if you don’t like the series, even if you don’t like the trailer, I don’t know how you can’t be somewhat excited about this movie. While films like La La Land, Moonlight, Boyhood, The Dark Knight, There Will Be Blood, Lord of the Rings, and more may have been better or more important cultural touchstones, the work that Marvel has been doing is far and away the most innovative and groundbreaking of the century, at least in terms of film marketing and the way it all connects. Infinity War is the ultimate example of bringing together an entire arsenal of characters, something that has never been done before, and that can be seen in the cast of this movie, which features upwards of fifty main characters. That’s right, we get to see (*deep breath*) Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Sebastian Stan, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Tom Holland, Anthony Mackie, Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurirra, Paul Rudd, Don Cheadle, and Samuel L. Jackson all working together in one epic quest. I can’t deny that I’m a little intrigued at how they’re going to pull this off. The film comes out May 4th, 2018, and you can watch the trailer below to really get the scope of the whole thing.
