Well, it seems the British know what they like, and what they like is La La Land, with Arrival and Nocturnal Animals not too far behind.
Yes, Damien Chazelle’s cultural phenomenon is continuing to dominate, earning 11 nominations from the BAFTA Awards, including Best Film, Director, Actor, Actress, Screenplay, Score, Sound, etc. It seems primed to win big here on its way to Oscar glory. It also helps that its biggest competition, Moonlight, has been crippled by a snub for its incredible director, Oscar frontrunner Barry Jenkins. However, this was nothing when compared to the snub for Denzel Washington in Fences. Apparently he pissed off the British somewhere along the way, because he has never been nominated in his extensive career.
Of course, the love for British films has not been diminished, as Cannes winner I, Daniel Blake has received several nominations, including Film, British Film, Director, and Supporting Actress. This is a film that people are excited about, and I’m excited to see it when it comes out.
Of course, the most surprising result was the massive love for Nocturnal Animals. Even though it didn’t receive a Best Picture nomination, it did receive love for Everything But. This includes Best Director, Screenplay, Actor for Jake Gyllenhaal and Supporting Actor for Aaron Taylor-Johnson. After his Globe nomination, he may be a major threat for an Oscar nom, and perhaps even a win. Of course, it is worth noting that Taylor-Johnson is of British descent, and thus has the edge in that department. It’s the same way Emily Blunt shocked us all with her nomination for Best Actress.
You can see the full list of nominees below, with asterisks to indicate correct predictions, and the full awards show will be held on February 12th.
