One of my favorite genres is the high-concept romance. These are films that portrayed a highly romantic story with two huge stars that has some weird twist leaving it outside the norm. At its most basic, this would be Pretty Woman-a romantic comedy involving corporate sharks and prostitutes-and at its most extreme, it would be Ghost-a romantic-horror-comedy starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore at their peak. Sadly, the genre’s been dead for several years, with the closest attempts being terrible Nicholas Sparks adaptations. However, Paramount wants to give it one last hurrah, and they’re sparing no expense in the process, as you can see from the first trailer for Passengers.
Set on a spaceship in the future, a malfunction causes the cryogenic chambers of Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) and Aurora Dunn (Jennifer Lawrence) wake up 90 years early on their quest to a new life. The only two souls on the entire ship, they two begin to fall in love.
The script for this film has been beloved in Hollywood for years, tracing back to a time when Keanu Reeves and Reese Witherspoon were supposed to star. However, it now has the support necessary, with Academy Award-nominee Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) directing, and starring arguably the two biggest actors on the planet (to the point that Lawrence is being paid $20 million for her role, an amount only rivaled by Tom Cruise, Robert Downey, Jr. and Sandra Bullock). The film is one of my most anticipated of the year, and even though this trailer tells me it isn’t the Oscar contender I’d hoped it would be, it still looks like an incredible blockbuster, and there is nothing wrong with that. The film comes out December 21st, and with two of my favorite actors anchoring it, you can be sure I’ll be first in line.
