One of the best movies of 2014, and one of the best superhero movies of all time, was Guardians of the Galaxy. When first announced, many people-myself included-scoffed at the idea. It was going to be a superhero movie that takes place in space and includes a raccoon and a giant tree that can only say its own name in Vin Diesel’s voice. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. However, the first trailer came out, and featured classic 70s music, a casual disdain for the rules, and a tongue placed firmly in cheek. It garnered enough hope for a small audience to show up opening night, but it mostly blew people away. I personally loved it, both as a rule-breaking throwback to the days of Star Wars and because its about a superhero who is really only good at two things: being sarcastic and dancing to 70s/80s music. It was like an autobiography for me. So, as you can imagine, the new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is an exciting prospect.
Two months after officially becoming a team, the universe’s favorite rogues set out on a quest through the cosmos to find Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) father, while struggling to keep the gang together.
If the trailer for the first film was a subtle indicator of the eventual success, this one acts like a foot to the door. It provides just enough to remind you of all the reasons you loved the first film, including a use of “Hooked on a Feeling” that plays even better than the first one), gorgeous action shots, subtle humor (“Spacesuits For Emergency. And For Fun”) and a lovable cast (Dave Bautista actually steals this trailer after being everyone’s least favorite Guardian in the first one), without ever giving away too much of the plot or the humor. It’s a fantastic trailer, and it has gotten me hyped beyond belief for the film. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 comes out May 5, 2017, and looks to be the breakout hit of next summer’s blockbuster season. Enjoy.
