I tend to be cynical when it comes to animated films. Honestly, Disney, Pixar and Studio Ghibli have set the bar so high, why should we be forced to settle for Minions or Planes? However, somewhere hiding beneath the surface of the animation landscape, just under Pixar but high above the rest, has been Dreamworks, a company that has been consistently putting out fantastic works, like How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda and, above all else, Shrek. And it shocks me to say this about a film based on a line of children’s dolls, but the upcoming Trolls looks like it could follow in the spirit of that lovable green ogre.
Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick play Branch and Princess Poppy, two polar opposites (Branch is dark and cranky while Poppy is perky and upbeat) who must team up to save the Troll community from being eaten by The Bergens.
The film also stars Russell Brand, Gwen Stefani, James Corden and Zooey Deschanel, not to mention a list of comedians and singers a mile long. Timberlake and Stefani also wrote a series of new songs for the movie, so if you’re wondering what that infectious tune is that keeps getting stuck in your head, it’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling,” the Song of the Summer that Timberlake wrote for Trolls. You can take your money straight to the bookie and bet on that song getting nominated this year at the Oscars.
Honestly, I’m just shocked this movie looks as good as it does. I laughed several times during the trailer, and I think Timberlake and Kendrick are two of the biggest talents of their generation. You can watch the trailer for what may be this year’s Lego Movie below:
