Mark Wahlberg’s Boston Marathon Bombing Drama ‘Patriots Day’ Has A Trailer

Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg are new Hollywood BFFs. After the huge success of Lone Survivor (a fine film; a little overrated, but not terrible), the two made not one, but two Based on a True Story hero films, both of which are being released this year. The first, Deepwater Horizon, was released to critical and commercial acclaim. The second, Patriots Day, just dropped its first trailer, before its big Oscar push come December.

Tommy Saunders (Wahlberg) is your average Boston police sergeant. However, that all changes when he’s following his usual beat at the Boston Marathon in 2013, when a bomb goes off and changes the city forever. Kevin Bacon is the FBI agent put in charge of the case, John Goodman plays police commissioner Ed Davis, J.K. Simmons plays the police chief of neighboring Watertown, and Alex Wolff of the Naked Brothers Band plays Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

I have mixed feelings on this film. I understand that this film was going to be inevitable-I stayed up all night watching that car chase play out in real time my Freshman year of college, and I’ll never forget it. It seemed cinematic even then. However, I’m not convinced that Berg and Wahlberg are right for bringing this story to the screen. Furthermore, I’m a little irritated that this is the exact same trailer as Deepwater Horizon, hitting every single beat as the original (seriously. Watch it here). It makes it seem incredibly cookie cutter. However, it’s got a great cast, and it could be an inspirational story, so it could play big. We’ll find out when the film comes out December 21st. You can watch the trailer below.
