Let me give you all a list of things I love: true stories, Aaron Sorkin screenplays, Jessica Chastain, thrillers. Based on this list, Molly’s Game would be a slam dunk for me, right? Boy, I hope so, but based on this trailer, I’m not really expecting much.
Molly Bloom (Chastain) was an Olympic skier before she was forced into retirement. Asked to assist her boyfriend run an underground poker game, she soon took over and turned it into the world’s most exclusive high-stakes game, including Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans, and the Rusian mob. When she was arrested, she found her only ally in her criminal defense lawyer, Charlie Jaffey (Idris Elba).
As mentioned above, I normally love everyone and everything involved with this film. However, this trailer looks like everyone working with their worst impulses: Chastain doing the worst version of her normal shtick, Kevin Costner doing the worst version of his normal shtick, and above all, Aaron Sorkin doing all of his worst shticks. It’s all of his Sorkinisms all rolled into one, and while I’m happy he’s finally working with a female lead, this trailer doesn’t convince me that he’s put any effort into it at all. I’m hoping that I’m proven wrong, but I’m approaching the film with a heavy dose of skepticism. Molly’s Game will have its premiere at TIFF next month before premiering on November 22nd.
