If you’re watching the Olympics, congrats on being one of the only Americans doing so! You’re a saint for putting up with NBC. If not, here’s a recap of tonight’s important moments: Michael Phelps won his 22nd metal, Simone Biles is continuing to kick ass, and oh yeah, there’s a trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
For those unaware, now that Disney owns the right to the franchise, they want to milk it for all its work. So every odd year, we will get a new film in the true series (Episodes, if you will). Every even year, we will be receiving a story based on some minor detail in the universe, such as a Han Solo or Boba Fett spinoff movie. The first one will tell the story of the team of bounty hunters hired by the Rebellion to steal the plans for the Empire’s ultimate weapon: the Death Star. To do so, they’ll have to avoid stormtroopers, Grand Moff Tarkin and a certain black-clad Lord of the Sith.
The trailer looks gorgeous, and despite rumors of reshoots and issues, I think that director Gareth Edwards is worthy of our trust. His Godzilla was a standout in 2014, and I’m sure he can work some magic here. The film stars Academy Award-nominee Felicity Jones, Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen (The Hunt), Diego Luna (Y tu mamá también), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises), Jiang Wen, Donnie Yen, Alan Tudyk (Firefly), and Jonathan Aris (Anderson from Sherlock!). Jimmy Smits will reprise his role as Bail Organa, and James Earl Jones will return as everyone’s favorite asthmatic! The film will be released December 16, and you can bet I’ll be amongst the first in line to see it.
