‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” Trailer

It’s been five years since the last film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. What started as one of the freshest and most innovative action-adventure films of the past two decades has sort of petered off over the years, including a mediocre sequel, a slightly improved third film, and an unwatchable fourth. Now it seems that Disney wants to give it one more go, as they are releasing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. And we finally have a trailer.

Directed by the Academy Award-nominated duo of Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, the film will follow the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) as he is pursued by Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) and his crew of ghost pirates. To defeat them, Jack must find the Trident of Poseidon, for whoever controls the trident controls the seas.

I have mixed feelings on this film. On the one hand, they are bringing back Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom, both of whom played a big role in the success of the first film. However, they also have Brenton Thwaites, who is absolutely atrocious in his only big film, Gods of Egypt. Furthermore, this trailer (which, oddly, does not feature Depp as Sparrow at all) seems more akin to On Stranger Tides than The Curse of the Black Pearl. I guess time will tell, but while I’ll be seeing this one in theaters, and I hope I am wrong, I don’t see this one being a major success. You can find out for yourself, though, on May 26, 2017, and you can get a taste for the action now with the teaser trailer.
