‘The Beguiled’ Has A New Trailer, And I’m Digging It

I put The Beguiled on the list of my most anticipated films of 2017, based on the talent behind the camera as well as in front, but truth be told I was always a bit skeptical. I love Sofia Coppola’s Lost In Translation, and I admire her Marie Antoinette, but The Bling Ring is so bad I had trouble enjoying The Virgin Suicides, the film many consider her best. I don’t know if I can stomach another nightmare like her last effort, and the first trailer barely tipped the scales. However, this most recent trailer has really made an impact on me. In fact, I’d go as far as to call it one of the best trailers since Jackie last year, and an early contender for possible best films of the year.

Based on the novel of the same name, as well as the Clint Eastwood version released in 1971, Sofia Coppola has chosen to tell the story from the point of view of the female characters. Essentially, Union Solider Jack McBurney (Colin Farrell) finds himself left for dead not too far from a women’s seminary. While there, he begins to manipulate his hostesses for his own benefit, both mentally and sexually. Figuring out his true motivations, the women conspire to flip the script on him, and a psychological battle begins.

Honestly, this is the perfect example of how to cut a trailer. It’s eerie, gorgeous, smart, and enticing, all at the same time. It really does seem like Coppola is back at the top of her game. The Apple Pie scene seems like it’s gonna be a talked-about moment, and with a cast including Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Angourie Rice, and Oona Laurence, I’m really watching this one closely. Hopefully it won’t disappoint me. The film will be premiering at the Cannes Film Festival next month before premiering on June 23, 2017. You can watch the trailer below.
