Romantic historical thrillers used to be a much more prevalent genre. The most obvious I can think of is Casablanca, but there are dozens, to be sure. They’ve recently started to become a dying breed, but Academy Award-winning director Rober Zemeckis wants to change all that with his big-budget thriller Allied.
Starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, the film will follow an American spy assassin (Pitt) and a French spy (Cotillard) who fall in love on a mission to kill a German officer in World War II Casablanca. Lizzy Caplan, Matthew Goode and Jared Harris also star.
I didn’t really think anything of this movie before today. Zemeckis has been on a downward journey since his glory days in the 80s and his awards-heavy days in the 90s. But this looks good in a way his films really haven’t in 20 years, and with a cast this good looking, I’m willing to give it a shot. The film is one of five jewels in Paramount’s Awards Crown this season, and you can check it out November 23. Watch the trailer below.
