In 2017, Jordan Peele released Get Out, a now-iconic horror film as well as one of the best films of the decade. The film was a monster success, critically and commercially, and Peele ended up earning a nomination for Best Director and winning for Best Original Screenplay. Now, Peele is back with a new horror film, a home invasion film titled Us. And as of 9 a.m. Christmas Day, it has a trailer – one that looks every bit as scary and as brilliant as Get Out, visually and thematically.
Gabe (Winston Duke) and Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) Wilson take their young kids Jason (Evan Alex) and Zora (Shahadi Wright-Joseph) to spend the weekend at their beach house with their friends the Tylers (Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Cali Sheldon, and Noelle Sheldon). However, weird things begin happening, and soon the group is confronted by strange visitors – doppelgangers of the Wilson family, determined to unleash chaos and violence upon the beach house patrons.
This is really a remarkable trailer. From the opening set to “I Got 5 On It” (which comes back as a frightening tune later in the trailer), to the shocking visuals, to the perfectly edited snippets that helped sell Get Out two years ago. Then there’s the little Peele touches, like the boat being named “B-Yacht-ch,” or the close-up crying face. Most of all, I am on board with the thematic material going on in this trailer – a story of past traumas, and our ability to be our own worst enemies, all playing out against a backdrop of The Strangers and The Shining. And while it may not be the Oscar contender Get Out was (time will tell), it is perfectly all right if Us settles for being a near-perfect horror film. Us opens on March 15th, 209, and you can watch the trailer below.
