If you asked the average person on the street to name a director for you, odds are there are only two that they could actually conjure. The first is Steven Spielberg. The second is Christopher Nolan, the man who brought us Memento, Inception, Interstellar and most importantly, The Dark Knight Trilogy. Nolan has taken us through space, time, dreams and comics, and now he is ready to take us to the battlefield, in 2017’s Dunkirk.
The film will follow the Battle of Dunkirk, also known as Operation Dynamo. When the British entered World War II in 1939, they vastly underestimated Hitler’s forces, and suddenly found their forces trapped on the beaches of France, with their backs to the ocean, facing down the approaching German forces. The British Expeditionary Force called upon all available Allied boats, as well as commandeering ships of all makes, shapes and sizes, in order to pull off the most daring rescue attempt in military history. While the subject has been touched upon in film before (Atonement is one fantastic example), it has never been portrayed in full on the big screen.
The cast includes younger actors, including Fionn Whitehead, Jack Lowden and, uh, Harry Styles (yes, that Harry Styles) alongside more seasoned actors such as Oscar nominees and winners Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance, as well as Nolan staple Cillian Murphy. The film has drummed up attention due to Nolan’s desire to literally crash a World War II plane in order to capture the true chaos on display. He will also continue pushing the limits of IMAX cameras by filming it mostly through said medium, with the occasional jump over to 65 mm. This should be one hell of a film, and we finally have a trailer to witness it.
You can watch this trailer below, and see the film when it comes out July 21st, 2017. I already have my money on it being the big Oscar contender next year.
