What I Watched, What You Watched #52

Well everyone, it’s finally here. The eight Star Wars film has been released, and most of us have seen it. If you’re wondering my thoughts, you can read them right here (I’m on the correct side of the divide over the film, in case you’re wondering). I also saw Roman J. Israel, Esq., which I will be reviewing later this week in a pre-Christmas review binge, as well as Loving Vincent, which I will not be reviewing, but is absolutely wonderful and worth a watch.

At home, I had a pretty basic week. To prepare for The Last Jedi, I watched two of the films Rian Johnson claimed inspired the film. The first was Hitchcock’s To Catch A Thief, which I’m sad to say was the first Hitchcock film to not win me over. It’s pretty to look at, and I love Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, but I just found it mildly interesting as opposed to truly “great.” The other was Twelve O’Clock High, which I thought featured a great performance by Gregory Peck and great aerial battles, but nothing to write home about. However, not all hope was lost this week, as I did get to watch the charming documentary Kedi. I’m not sure there’s much of a plot or a message to the film, but there’s nothing more enjoyable than watching a bunch of cats wandering the streets of Istanbul for 75 minutes. And the cat fight shot similarly to a big-screen action sequence was brilliant. And I’m about halfway through Lenny, which I am absolutely loving because Bob Fosse is a great director, and because Lenny Bruce is a fascinating man. It’s worth the watch.

On television, it’s a bit of a dead week. All of the “art” shows have ended, leaving only the ABC Family lineup for entertainment. I don’t really remember any of the episodes, but I do think The Middle had a somewhat decent episode dealing with a Midwest Christmas when the kids are grown up, and Speechless damn near made me cry in its brilliance. If you can only watch one, go with Speechless. Oh, and I finally got around to watching GLOW, and good God, is it great. I’m loving every second of it.

This is going to be a busy week for the site, with a proposed three lists, five reviews, and more coming as a holiday gift. I hope you enjoy, and in the meantime, let me know in the comments if you saw anything good this week, as well as how you liked the new Star Wars!
